9th November is Hedy Lamarr's birthday.
Did you know that the original idea and patent that led to cellular phone technology comes from the movie star, Hedy Lamarr?

She knew a great deal about weaponry by listening to her first husband, Fritz Mandl, an armament manufacturer. She left her husband when he became increasingly involved in deals with the Nazis and made her way to London, then on to Hollywood.

Hedy Lamarr
She'd kept her mind active on what she'd heard about the problems of radio controlled missiles and how easy it was to block the simple signal. She realized that if the signal jumped from frequency to frequency quickly (like changing channels on a TV or radio) and both sender and receiver changed in the same order, then the signal could never be blocked by someone "listening in" who didn't know how the frequency was changing.

Hedy LamarrIn those days before the transistor was invented it was difficult to design a way for this to be accomplished. Composer George Antheil suggested using something similar to piano rolls, from player pianos, to keep both sides in synch. Together, he and Lamarr patented the "Secret Communication System" in 1942. At that time the idea of using the paper rolls was too cumbersome to be practical.

Hedy LamarrWhen the transistor did become available the Navy used the idea in secure military communications and when transistors became really cheap the idea was used in cellular phone technology. By the time the Navy used the idea, the original patent had expired and Lamarr and Antheil never received any royalty payments for their idea.

In 1997 she was honored with an award at the Computers, Freedom, and Privacy conference for "blazing new trails on the electronic frontier." Hedy Lamarr died on January 19, 2000.

My Bit Char-G configuration
Thanks to Alex and all the extra bits, my Bit Char-G has the softest red spring, the medium hardness tires, teal gears and the 3.0 motor.

Its the cutest and fastest thing this side of the coffee table. (:
The Bit Char-G Guide for Bits!
Thanks to TheFanMan and TinyRC

Drift Sets:
The drift kit comes with an axle that has plastic molded tires. The gear ratio is orange. They cause your cars to spin easily, and corner very sharply. They are not well suited to racing etc. The pack also comes with a set of medium (stock) tires and a spring set (ranging from soft to hard). The springs are located on the front top of your chassis. The stock springs are white and the add-ons are red.

Tire Sets:
This set includes three different sets of tires. They are soft, medium, and hard. The soft tires have an off road style tread on them while the hard tires have a street tread. The mediums have no tread at all. They are much the same as the stock tires that come with cars, but are slightly harder. Note: The hard tires are very difficult to get on the front wheels! Be careful to not damage your wheels when putting them on or taking them off.

Gear/Axle Sets:
This set comes with three different gear ratios, consisting of an axle (without tires) and a matching colored gear. You cannot mix the gear colors or the car will not run due to gear binding. The gear colors are as follows:
Blue - good acceleration but not much top end. Good for climbing and technical tracks.
Orange - fair speed, fair acceleration. A good all around gear. This setup comes standard with all cars except special editions.
Teal - somewhat slow acceleration but great top end. Good for racing or wide open spaces. This setup comes standard with all special edition cars.

Motors:
There are four different speeds of motors. They are:
1.0 (blue) - comes standard with all newer cars. It is the slowest motor but has good torque. Recommended for beginners.
2.2 (yellow) - comes standard with most older cars. It can also be bought separately. This motor is the best all-around motor. It is reliable and fast, but not so fast as to be uncontrollable.
2.6 (orange) - comes standard with all special edition cars. It is faster, but not as reliable as the 2.2.
3.0 (red) - almost too fast for practical use. Recommended for short drag racing runs only. Less reliable than the 2.2.
ICQ
*sigh* Pretty please, if I am on your ICQ list, send me a message, so I can add you into my 'OH SO EMPTY just reinstalled' ICQ.

Including you, Linda. Yes YOU!!

Shisha
As if I do not have enough addictions in my life.

I now add Shisha to my ever growing list.

Thanks to my very own hookah, and much practice, I can now prepare and smoke up a bowl in less than 5 minutes.

*cough*

Painite is one of the rarest minerals on earth. Only four crystals are known to exist. Its chemical formula is: CaZrBAl9O18. The orange-red to brownish-red color is caused by minor amounts of chromium and vanadium in the mineral. Although it often appears in lists of gemstones, no crystal has ever been faceted.
What is shisha?
Shisha is tobacco mixed with molasses and fruit flavors and is smoked in a hookah. It is very light and flavorful with a wonderful fruity aroma. It is smoked for the flavor and not for any kind of effect. Though the most popular flavor is apple, others include strawberry, pineapple, apricot, grape, rose, mint, and even cappuccino! In the Middle East, from Turkey to India, there are shisha cafes where people gather to smoke and drink coffee or tea. Smoking shisha can last two hours or more and is a very peaceful, social occassion generally filled with good conversation with friends.

So what is a hookah?
A hookah is known by many different names in different parts of the world: a shisha, a nargile (pronounced nar-geelah), a hubble-bubble or hubbly-bubbly, a waterpipe. The most famous instance of hookah smoking is probably that of the caterpillar in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. A hookah consists of a hollow glass (sometimes clay or brass) base which is filled with water, a vertical pipe topped with a clay bowl for the shisha and coals, and a usually colorful hose. When one sucks on the hose, the smoke is drawn down the pipe and through the water, which cools and filters it. This also produces a peaceful bubbling sound.

What's the point of all these information?
I am a proud owner of a brand new hookah and is now peacefully puffing on apricot flavoured shisha. (:

The best Raw Fish Porridge in Singapore can be found at a dingy old Hawker Centre at Maxwell Road. I can't remember for the life of me what the name of the stall is, but its opposite another stall selling fish noodles. Also, there is a perpetual line of trillions of people lining up for the porridge so you really can't miss it.
Oh JOY! JOY! JOY!

Today, I recieved a call from Telecoms. Streamyx is now IN MY AREA!

Driving like a maniac, I was at the Kedai Telecoms within minutes. Snarling at the counter attendent, I grabbed an application form and filled it in. With much hope and a glimmer of a tears in my eye, I handed the form in.

A week more to wait. They promised.

Oh JOY! JOY! JOY!

I have now in my possession 2 kgs of technical grade Sodium Hydroxide. After searching high and low in countless shops. After calling a trillion people and chemical companies. It finally arrived TODAY.

Now I have the oils. I have the fragrances. I have the colours. I have additives. I have sodium hydroxide aka caustic soda aka LYE.

I am soooo ready to make soap this weekend.

Again.
