Maitreya ProjectMaitreya Project

Creating Peace for the Individual and the World

"Maitreya" comes from the Sanskrit word "maitri' which means love in the sense of compassion and responsibility. As it's focus, Maitreya Project is building a magnificent 500ft / 152m bronze statue of the world's next Buddha, Maitreya, in northern India. The Project is based on the premise that inner peace and outer peace share a cause and effect relationship. The statue will remind everyone of the need for loving-kindness, cultivating inner peace as well as peace within the family, the community and the world.

The Project will benefit the people of India through its economic impact and social programmes, which includes health care and education of international standard.

The statue has been designed to last for at least 1,000 years - a unique and demanding requirement for modern architects and engineers - to enable the Project's spiritual and social work to thrive for at least a millennium.

A Message of Loving-kindness and Peace

We are living in very uncertain times. Humanity and all living things are constantly under threat and there is an urgent need to create the causes for harmony throughout the world.

All of the world's major religions and humanitarian traditions teach the ethical values of tolerance, patience, loving-kindness and compassion. As these universal values are embraced and take root in the minds and hearts of more and more people, world peace will become an attainable dream.

"Loving-kindness is the cause, peace is the result, internally and externally - peace for the individual, the family, the community, and for the whole world.
"This is the way to bring peace and happiness, not only in the present world, but in the future as well."
--- Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Spiritual Director of Maitreya Project

"Relying on certain Mahayana Buddhist citations and quotations, we believe that in this fortunate aeon one thousand Buddhas will appear. This is the time of the fourth Buddha, Buddha Shakyamuni, whose teaching is still existing, and the fifth Buddha will be Maitreya Buddha."
--- His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama
